Robwrong: When did Acid King start?
Lori: In 1993. I put an add in the SF Weekly in search of a bassist and drummer. I received no calls from any drummers but Peter Lucas the original Acid King bassist answered the add and we did the hook up. I was at a friends house, sort of a party I guess you could say although it was the kind place that was always a party and I yelled out `Hey does anyone know any drummers!` Enter one Joey Osbourne whom with a mouth full of burrito yelled Out `I`m a drummer` and the rest is rock history.
Robwrong: I have noticed the few times I have seen Acid King over the years you have changed line-ups several times and had quite a few heavy hitters in the band. How do you think your music has developed and did any of it come from playing with different people? Over the years?
Lori: Well, its hard to say if playing with different bassists has made the change or if it was just a natural progression of songwriting and so forth. Definitely Peter was more ambient and spacey. He played with a Roland Space Echo and Roland Phase Shifter, which at that time gave AK more of space rock type of sounds. Dan was a hired gun that came through for us when Peter left the band ended up staying for 2 years! He really did not come form the background of music and songwriting that I did so although he is a good bassist his style didn`t lend much to the AK sound which is why we ended up only recording 3 songs with him for the Down with the Crown 10" We found Brian after that who was previously playing with Spilth and Buzz Oven and if you know those bands they`re not like Acid King! Much more agro math rock, faster and more aggressive. Brian had a great tone and was ready to get back into playing music again after taking some time off. We wrote Busse Woods while Brian was in the band and he really lent a groove I could get into to. Unfortunately Brian didn`t feel that way! After playing with us for a year he decided AK was not for him and went of to do other things and is now playing with Men of Porn. After Brian split old friend and killer freaking bass player Guy Pinhas enters! He had just left Goatsnake and was really into helping us out. Well it`s been a year now! Guy is by far the best bass player I`ve ever played with. (Sorry guys!) Being from the old school doom rock metal days he is a natural for my song writing and it`s unbelievable the difference it makes having him in the band Riffmaster! Let`s see how long he lasts in the band HA!
Robwrong: Busse Woods is my favorite AK album. What were some of the highlights recording that record in the studio?
Lori: It was a lot of fun recording that CD. Everything really came together so easily, although I just started getting work on my braces and could barely sing with this weird mouthpiece they had in me! I guess having the time to be creative add 3rd and 4th guitar tracks and so forth. We had time and money and the fact that it all came together so easily made it a good experience. Can`t pin point a particular highlight it was all good.
Robwrong: How was it working with the man, Billy Anderson?
Lori: We`ve worked with Billy on every Acid King record! He rules! I know I can just walk into the studio plug in and not have to worry about too much. The fact that Billy gets it and knows how to put this kind of music to tape is what makes it all sound so good. We`ve been working together for so long and as of now I still have no desire to have anyone else. He`s a crack up and an awesome engineer, cute too HA!
Robwrong: What are some of the shows that you have played on the road that stuck out in your head?
Lori: Well after just returning from being on the road with High on Fire that`s sticking out in my head right now. The last 3 shows we played on the East Coast were with Spirit Caravan as well and I was just so damn happy to be actually sharing the stage with Matt and Wino, a girls dream come true!! We were lucky enough to play with Sleep and Hawkwind years ago which was a memorable rock night for me. Also, we went on a small west coast tour with Fu Manchu a few years back and that was a blast those guys rule!
Robwrong: Busse Woods is killer for `99 Any thing new coming out soon full length? Have you been working on any new material?
Lori: Oh yea, we`ve got a split CD coming out in January with The Mystikal Krew of Klearlight. Guy recorded 2 new songs with us and we had another song previously recorded with Brian that Guy added some 12 string bass to. Now we`re working on a full length, who knows when it will be done, I`m a slowwwwww songwriter!!
Robwrong: What are some of your favorite bands in the area where you live?
Lori: High on Fire of course, Lost Goat, Men Of Porn those are my friends and fellow rockers!
Robwrong: What do you think of the Internet and how has it effected you directly, and your band directly?
Lori: Well is has kept us in touch with the fans. Before e-mail we would get some fan mail here and there via our P.O. box which we still do but people did not know how to get in touch with us and unless there was a write up or review in a publication there would be no mail. With the Internet and all the links people can check it out, drop a note and it`s kept us constantly connected to fans and magazines and so forth.
Robwrong: That`s cool that you guys recorded a version of 39 lashes on the record. One of the bands I am in covered that song years ago from Jesus Christ Superstar. How came up with that one?
Lori: I don`t know I just picked up the JCSS LP cause Ian Gillan was on it and I was totally Influenced by the riffs! I was like dude check it out listen to this! Brian thought I was crazy for wanting to do it but it came out great and he got to do vocals on it! That`s funny that you did this before I guess The Cows did too cause someone had asked me why we did the Cows song 39 lashes; I just had to laugh at that one!
Robwrong: Speaking of which, are you religious, or spiritual in some way or another?
Lori: I`d like to think of myself as spiritual. I`ve read the art of happiness by the Dalai Lama and I try to live with a bit of Buddha`s wisdom in me! I`m not religious, never was. I like to take what I can from every religion and apply it to myself but I cannot see fully believing in one thing.
Robwrong: And now, here is what we like to call here at StonerRock.Com - 13 stupid questions...Just some quick questions we are gonna start asking everyone. You can make these answers brief if you want... here goes. If you weren`t a rocker, what would you most like to be?
Lori: I`d prolly be a student! I`d like to go to school, since I was such a freaking burnout in high school. I`d get more into my film career probably, as well it`s very cool and I can only put so much into now with the band and all.
Robwrong: What was your worst gig and why? What was your best gig and why?
Lori: Worst gig hmmmmmmmmm..... Well we pulled into Little Rock, Arkansas to play on a Tuesday night while out on out Southwest tour a few years back. We loaded in did sound check then tour down and loaded out as No One Came!!! Ate free pizza and Swam at the Super 8 indoor pool so all was not lost HA! Best gig hmmmmm..... Our last show we just played with High on Fire at the Double Door in Chicago. The place was packed it`s my old hometown and people were fully getting into us. We sold a ton of merchandise and it was just so cool to be like hey people dig us, alright!! Not to mention we played a killer set that night if I don`t say so myself.
Robwrong: Top 3 movies, books and albums of all time?
Lori: Argh! Too much of a question-Movies ? Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Billy Jack, Dead Man
Books - Sorry I have a room full of 1/2 read books! Check back later!
Albums- Forget it no way I can name 3
Robwrong: How often do you surf the net and what do you mostly do while online?
Lori: I barely ever surf the net. It`s an info overload for me. If I want to see if a band is on tour I`ll check out a band web page but that`s about it. I use as a travel agent mostly HA!
Robwrong: What is your favorite city and venue to play, and why?
Lori: Well, as of right now Chicago is my favorite city at the Double Door. I love Diane the booker at The OK Hotel in Seattle; as well she knows how to treat a band right!
Robwrong: What is the most Rock `n` Roll thing you`ve ever done? What`s the most Rock `n` Roll thing you`ve seen someone else do?
Lori: Shit I don`t know I`m not very rock n roll. Hell! Guess posing with my motorcycle helmet for the new cover of our CD. I was going to pose topless but it kinda, sorta changed and now the picture is very cool but no Free titties!! Sorry people! Let`s see one of our bass players we won`t say who had a friend on tour in which we were invited to stay over at her house after the show. It was late enough when we got they`re at 4am and I passed out, they stayed up partying. Go at knock on the door early in the AM, saying we have 1 hour to get out! Fuck I brushed my teeth and we all got out 1/2 asleep, ends up the girl`s boyfriend was their the entire time while our Casanova of the 4 strings was making out with her in the house!! Good thing we didn`t get a shotgun to the head!
Robwrong: What`s your worst `bad trip` story?
Lori: Oh man I have to say when I was 15. We all did blotter I had a party, everyone was so fucked up. I started freaking out and started to kick everyone out the place was trashed. My records were all stuck together with beer and no one would leave and I was fully tripping! I finally got everyone out and it was sort of frosty out in the suburbs of Illinois, A big wrestling match started on my lawn and there were hand and foot prints all over. The party moved down the street to another friend`s house and I ended up wishing it was over, wishing it was over. My friend`s parents ended up sending her to some hospital for fucked up teenagers FUCK!
Robwrong: What`s the most painful thing you have ever witnessed at a rock show?
Lori: Stupid skinhead slam dancers. Still I can`t believe there`s always some idiot pissed off at the world at a freaking show trying to start a pit! Can`t speak of a particular incident I just hate this, stick to punk rock dudes We don`t want you!
Robwrong: How old were you when you first realize you wanted to rock?
Lori: Well I`ve always been a rocker since I was a teenager. I didn`t start playing the guitar `till I was 19-20 years old. I always went to concerts and really starting getting into playing later on. Worked at record stores when I was in high school so long ago...
Robwrong: What`s the most embarrassing job you ever had?
Lori: Well, I guess, answering phones for a pizza place when I was 15 while horny pizza makers would pretend to put pepperoni in my butt! Although if it wasn`t for that job I may never have been turned on to Thin Lizzy!
Robwrong: What`s your favorite ice cream flavor?
Lori: As of right now, Ben and Jerry`s Coffee Toffee Heath Bar Crunch...
Robwrong: If you could date any rock star Dead or Alive in the world, who would it be? Movie star?
Lori: Only one rock star big enough per family for me! I don`t fucking know! Been there done that don`t need no more rock starssss hahahhahahahhaha.
Robwrong: What would be the ultimate dream gig of all time line-up be, with your band opening? Limit to 3 bands please (including your own...) and where?
Lori: First of all my dream line up would have us in the middle not opening! This is sooo hard to answer I can`t.. I`ve already played so many
killer shows with some many cool bands. Sorry dudes no can answer this one.
